5 Tasteful Ways to Wear Burlesque Every Day
Burlesque fashion is sexy and fun, and you don't have to wait for a special event to pull it off. As we celebrate everything burlesque this weekend at the Windy City Burlesque Festival, we encourage everyone with a taste for this type of style to discover new ways to enjoy it.
Did you know you can tastefully incorporate an authentic burlesque look into your wardrobe every day? Here are five tips to express burlesque fashion outside of a special burlesque event.
1. Accessorize with Flair
While burlesque fashion is anything but subtle, you can show it off with a little restraint. Take one vintage burlesque accessory and combine it with your casual wardrobe. Examples include a peacock feather, a sparkly hairpiece, or a glitzy scarf or boa. This kind of accessorizing adds a huge pop to your everyday jeans, strappy tops and dresses.
2. Command Your Makeup
A big part of the burlesque look is the bold makeup. While you may not want to paint your entire face like you're about to perform a Broadway show, you can express hints of burlesque style on your face—just don't do it all at once. Practice showing off some cat eyes, sparkly eye shadow, dark and defined eyebrows, gorgeously long and thick lashes, lusciously rouged cheeks or deep red lips. Choosing just one of these techniques when you go out will make a statement without going over the top.
3. It's All About The Corset
Few people know how versatile corsets can be! You can wear them under almost anything, with the benefit of having a killer waistline and outstanding posture. Many burlesque corsets are also designed to look fabulous as outerwear, so pick your favorite to wear with an open jacket. Some underbust corsets can be worn over thin fabric tops as well.
4. High, High Stockings
One of the most familiar burlesque looks is wearing thigh-high stockings, complete with a garter belt and straps. While this fashion statement is most commonly associated with the burlesque stage or the bedroom, there's no reason you can't rock high stockings under a variety of skirts and dresses. If you've got a thirst for burlesque expression, this can be your little secret.
5. Customize Your Clothes
You don't need to be an expert seamstress to add some burlesque glamour to the clothes you already have. Change the buttons on your jacket or blouse, sew glitzy patches to your jeans or purse, or add a little burlesque flair to your collar. Everyone expresses burlesque different, so choose the style that is uniquely yours and go with it!
